WHAT IS FAIRTRADE?

The function of the Fairtrade Foundation is to ensure a better deal for marginalised producers in developing countries by awarding the FAIRTRADE Mark to products that meet international standards set by Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO). The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on UK products as a guarantee that producers have received a better deal.

There are five guarantees behind the FAIRTRADE Mark:

  1. The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees farmers a fair and stable price for their products
  2. The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees extra income for farmers and estate workers to improve their lives
  3. The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees a greater respect for the environment
  4. The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees small farmers a stronger position in world markets
  5. The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees a closer link between consumers and producers

WHY PROMOTE FAIRTRADE IN LONDON?

“The developed world dominates markets and dumps its subsidised agricultural produce at below cost. Fairtrade is about leveling the playing field. It helps producers in developing countries lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty. London’s Fairtrade City Campaign sends out a clear message that will boost support throughout the UK and beyond. I call on London boroughs, retailers, businesses, schools, colleges and Londoners themselves to choose Fairtrade.”

Nicky Gavron, Deputy Mayor of London.

The impact of the Fairtrade London Campaign will be huge. Promoting Fairtrade in London will not just raise awareness amongst London’s 7.4 million residents, but will reverberate internationally thanks to London’s position as a global centre in finance, media, business and tourism. Bringing international and local communities together will raise the profile of Fairtrade and benefit more producers.

“Becoming a Fairtrade Town was something so positive. It united us all at the council – councillors from all three parties, officers and the rest of the workforce. And that sense of unity goes beyond the council to people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds in Camden. It’s a badge we wear with pride.”

Nusrat Yousuf, Sustainability Co-ordinator, Environmental Policy and Projects Team, London Borough of Camden.
